The village is best known for its 600 hectare Landloper colony in which a number of buildings are protected as a monument. Besides this heritage there are also some nature reserves in the area where people can enjoy the native fauna and flora. There is also connection to various cycling and mountain bike trails and hiking routes.
In Merksplas we have the prison museum in the basement of the chapel on the colony.
In the large farm on the colony an explanation is given of the origin of the colonies in the Netherlands and Belgium.
In neighboring villages and towns/cities you will find historical buildings and cultural places . And market places.

The sports enthusiasts will find something to their liking in Merksplas, because there are football, basketball and volleyball courts installed in various places, you can play table tennis (also indoors Maison Paula) and petanque and there is a skatepark at the sports center ‘t Hofeind. There are several mountain bike routes in Merksplas and surroundings. Swimming can be in several neighboring villages. Water Skiing and Kayaking is also a possibility.
In the not so distant area of the municipality of Merksplas one can visit multiple parks. Some examples of parks with swimming pond and playground are De Mosten in Meer and the Lilse Bergen. Both parks can be combined with hiking and biking trails.
Bobbejaanland is an amusement park in Lichtaart. And Efteling is an amusement park and recreation park in Kaatsheuvel, Netherlands.
Additionally you have the Safari park Beekse Bergen just across the Dutch border in Hilvarenbeek. And animal parks with De Olmense Zoo, the Zoo of Antwerp and Planckendael in Mechelen.
